I hope that you are enjoying the warmer weather that we have been having lately. With the school holidays on in full force this month it’s going to be a very busy time for me. I have taken on two new regular markets, one here in Port, the Port Central Real Food market and one down in Bulahdelah. So that will keep me on my toes, along with the usual extra markets at Scotts Head, Hat Head and South West Rocks. Plus, there is the annual Karuah Oyster and Timber Festival. Yup, a very busy month. I’m so glad that Nan and Graham are on hand to cover some of the markets. I’m also very glad that I have my van so I can stay overnight and not have to travel as far.

Though having said that, I unexpectedly had the opportunity to sell my little HiAce van, and I am now using my much larger LDV Deliver9 van. That was a bit of a shock to the system, but I’m getting used to driving her and finding out how to do each of the different markets as she doesn’t fit into all the smaller spaces that my HiAce used to fit it. It’s a steep learning curve, but I LOVE the fact that I can stand up in this van – her name is ESE – and I will gradually get her fitted out as I want, as I get the time and the money. A friend of mine is visiting from Brisbane and was kind enough to bring me a set of IKEA expanding metal bed supports and the associated wood cross struts, so that will be the next job once the school holidays are over. In the meantime, I simply moved everything over from the little van into the bigger van. The setup worked fine before, and it will work fine now 😊

Once the month of September is over, I will be drawing out the winning customers who have been lucky enough to get 10% off their next order. You have until the end of September to get your order in or come to see me at a market. Fingers crossed that you will be one of the 10 lucky winners to celebrate the fact that I have now been running my turmeric business for 10 years and it’s all thanks to you wonderful people. Without my customers I wouldn’t have a business, so I am very grateful for everyone of you and so glad that I can pass on all the benefits that I have felt by taking turmeric myself.

TURMERIC FOR ULCERATIVE COLITIS: CAN CURCUMIN HELP?

Turmeric and its powerful constituent, curcumin, are no strangers to scientific research. Long used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, the Curcuma longa plant always had an aura surrounding it regarding its therapeutic benefits.

With thousands of clinical and peer-reviewed studies in the books, we now have a vast swath of evidence suggesting that it’s more than just hype. But can turmeric help with ulcerative colitis (UC)?

Turmeric has shown potential as an alternative treatment in several conditions characterized by inflammation. These include arthritis, fibromyalgia, and eczema and psoriasis. Curcumin can even help detox and cleanse the liver.

Numerous studies have emerged, suggesting that curcumin can also target a few of the primary causes of UC. Thus, it may help reduce some of the uncomfortable symptoms, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, and rectal bleeding.

To understand how curcumin helps, we first need to look at the causes of UC. With UC, the patient suffers from chronic inflammation in the GI tract (gastrointestinal tract).

Unfortunately, this prolonged inflammation may cause extensive damage to the GI tract leading to significant pain and discomfort. If left untreated, chronic intestinal inflammation can even lead to more serious conditions. Ulcerative colitis frequently occurs in the rectum and the large intestine (colon). Damaged areas are continuous, not patchy, and they start at the rectum extending further into the colon.

We know that curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) possesses many vital healing properties. Perhaps its most substantial assets are its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. By targeting inflammation directly, it’s thought that curcumin can benefit UC symptoms and improve quality of life.

In one randomized, double-blind study with patients who had quiescent ulcerative colitis (UC) they tested curcumin’s ability to serve as maintenance therapy. The results showed that curcumin was not only a safe, natural medication, but it greatly reduced the frequency of relapse in people with UC. Turmeric also suppressed morbidity linked to UC, improving the patient’s overall health.

In another study the group taking turmeric saw a massive 38% of patients reach complete endoscopic remission, while none of the placebo group achieved the same. This means there are no visual signs of UC in the intestines, all with no apparent adverse side effects during this study.

Typically, UC gets treated with antibiotics, steroids, and immunomodulators. The reason why curcumin has become a focal point of research is due to the long-term adverse side effects of these treatment methods. Curcumin can reduce free radicals, increase antioxidant capacity, and influence several signalling pathways. The best turmeric supplement with black pepper (Health2all Turmeric has 8 herbs and spices including the black pepper to aid digestive absorption) will not only demonstrate potent antioxidant properties, but it will also attack the very foundation of inflammation by inhibiting several inflammatory processes.

As always, take precaution and consult with your doctor to see if Health2all Turmeric fits within your current regimen.
