Turmeric may help manage diabetes

Updated: Mar 28

Nowadays more and more people are starting to appreciate the powerful healing properties of turmeric.

The power of turmeric has expanded beyond the kitchen. The curcumin found in turmeric is known to have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and even improve insulin resistance and cholesterol levels. It may not be long before we see how turmeric may soon start to play a key role in alternative and even conventional medicine.

Turmeric has been shown to help with obesity and diabetes.

Obesity

A 30-day study in 44 people who had difficulty losing weight found significant reductions in body weight, body mass index, as well as waist and hip circumference when they supplemented twice a day with 800 mg of curcumin and 8 mg of piperine (black pepper).

Pre-diabetes

When it comes to prediabetes, studies so far have shown the positive benefits of adding turmeric to one's diet, on top of following a healthy plant-based diet or one that has been recommended by one's doctor.

Diabetes

For those with diabetes, research is showing that it can help people manage their blood sugar levels. Curcumin exhibits a positive effect on high blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity. It may also help reduce the risk or severity of some complications related to diabetes.

Adding turmeric to your diet

If you are thinking about adding turmeric to your diet either as a health supplement or in cooking, there are some key points to note. Please remember that turmeric is not a medication, and it should not replace a comprehensive diabetes management plan, or a weight loss plan or plans for any other medical situation. Always speak to your doctor and consult a dietitian for help with planning your meals.
