Welcome to my June Newsletter.
I hope that this newsletter finds you well. For those of you like me on the mid north coast, I hope that you are safe and dry, and that you haven’t been too badly impacted by all this terrible flooding. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been most affected. For those of you who are in the drought areas, I really wish that I could send some of this rain down to you because you need it desperately and we are well and truly over it! I think that I am beginning to develop webbed feet, and my lovely red gumboots have had an early work-out, but as I live fairly high up I am very grateful that I have not been really affected.
As many of you are aware a lot of my markets were cancelled last month, so, just remember, that if you can’t get to the markets or they have been cancelled due to adverse weather events, you can always give me a ring or go onto my website to order your turmeric and I can either drop it off for you or post it out. Where there’s a will, there’s a way 😊
Just a heads up, this month starts on a Sunday, this always throws out my usual pairings, so even I have to think about where I’m going to be each week. You can check out where I hope to be this month and fingers crossed that the worst of the rain is behind us and that we all get some more sunshine in this neck of the woods.
My article this month is looking at another of turmeric’s amazing properties. Not only is curcumin anti-inflammatory, but it’s anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and the property I am looking at this month is its amazing anti-fungal properties, especially for systemic problems such as candidal infections, be that in the mouth or in more sensitive areas. Not only is this bad for your overall health but it can be very painful as well as unpleasant. Yet another tick for turmeric.
And do check out the great chicken and turmeric soup/stew, call it what you will, it’s a wonderful nourishing dish and a firm family favourite. Enjoy.

Turmeric: A Natural Antifungal

Famous throughout Asia as a culinary spice used in hundreds of traditional dishes, turmeric is one of the world’s most talked-about medicinal herbs.
Ground turmeric root has an earthy taste, and a distinctive bright yellow colour. It’s been used throughout history in curries, soups and even as a colouring agent. But of course, it’s turmeric’s incredible therapeutic properties that have made it a part of traditional medicine.
When it comes to natural anti-inflammatory treatments, turmeric is the king. Turmeric’s secret is its active ingredient, curcumin. Numerous scientific studies have shown curcumin to have similar anti-inflammatory properties to pharmaceutical drugs such as hydrocortisone. It’s also suggested that curcumin could be effective in treating chronic inflammatory conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and as well as arthritis.
As an antifungal agent, turmeric boasts some surprising properties. Several studies have pointed to turmeric’s efficacy in fighting both Candida albicans and the biofilms that it forms. This makes it a very useful addition to an anti-Candida program. Pharmaceutical antifungal drugs are often associated with a number of side effects, which is why natural antifungal treatments can often be preferable.
A Brazilian research team investigating the efficacy of curcumin against 23 strains of fungi found that curcumin was able to completely inhibit the growth of Candida albicans, as well as a number of other fungal strains. The researchers also tested curcumin using human cells, and found curcumin was able to stop Candida from adhering to the human cells. In fact, they found that curcumin was even more potent than the commercial antifungal drug fluconazole.
Another study examined the effect of ascorbic acid on the antifungal properties of curcumin. Although ascorbic acid has no significant antifungal properties of its own, researchers found that using it alongside curcumin it made the curcumin more effective. Even more remarkable was that the curcumin was 5 -10 times more effective against Candida albicans when it was used in the presence of ascorbic acid! This suggests that certain vitamin C supplements may help to make curcumin even more effective against Candida.
So, your turmeric can help fight candidal infections, orally as well as systemically. This is particularly important for those people who have a compromised immune system.

Homemade Chicken and Noodles

INGREDIENTS:
§ 1 whole Roast Chicken (or chicken portions if you prefer) cut up
§ 2 whole Carrots, diced
§ 2 stalks Celery, diced
§ ½ medium Brown Onion, diced (optional)
§ 1 teaspoon Salt
§ 1 teaspoon Health2all turmeric
§ ¼ teaspoon Ground Thyme
§ 2 easpoons Parsley Flakes
§ 450 - 500gms Egg Noodles
§ 3 tablespoons Plain Flour (or corn flour)
§ 1 l Chicken stock
INSTRUCTIONS:
Add the carrots and celery (and onions, if using) to the pot with some olive oil or a knob of butter. Cook for a few minutes until the onion is translucent. Then add the herbs and spices, EXCEPT THE HEALTH2ALL TURMERIC. Stir to combine and cook for a few minutes to meld the flavours.
Add the stock and increase heat then add the egg noodles and chicken. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until the noodles are almost cooked.
Mix flour and a little water. Stir until smooth. Pour into soup, stir to combine, and simmer for another 5 minutes, or until broth begins to thicken. Test and adjust seasonings as needed. Add the Health2all Turmeric at this point.

THIS MONTH’S MARKETS AND EVENTS

I hope that by the time June rolls round that the weather will have cleared and we are blessed by the sun!! We have had so much rain up here that many of the grounds are very sodden, hopefully this sun will help to dry them out. Beware, this month starts on a Sunday, so all my normal pairings are thrown out, so check below. I hope to see you some time.
Sunday 1st June – Blackhead Car boot – 8am – 12pm (The Blackhead Bazaar is on its winter holiday). Held in the car park of the IGA. I’m not sure exactly where I will be but look out for my orange gazebo roof – I shouldn’t be too hard to find. 😊
Saturday 7th June – Kempsey Market - 9am – 1pm. Held up in the carpark by the river. We should be fine up there. so do come a long for a great day out.
Sunday 8th June – Forster Town Market – 8am – 1pm – Held on the green off Head Street. Great little market.
Saturday 14th June - Gloucester Farmers Market - 9am – 12pm. Held at Billabong Park. Hopefully the ground will be dry in time for this lovely market with lots of great local produce and wines.
Sunday 15th June – Laurieton Market - 8am – 1pm down by the river on Short and Tunis Streets. Let’s hope that the weather is better and we can have a market this month.
Saturday – 21st June - Forster Farmers Market – 7am – 12pm Along the river by the Police Station. We are now back in our old spot where the Visitors Centre and the CWA used to be. Getting bigger and better all the time.
Sunday 22nd June – Old Bar Market – 8am – 1pm. Held down by the skate park. Come along and find my bright orange gazebo. Hope to see you there.
Saturday 28th June – Tuncurry Market – 8 am – 1pm See you over the bridge at the John Whiley Park.
Sunday 29th June – Pacific Palms Market - 8am – 1pm. At Elizabeth Beach, another great market for all the family and dog friendly, so come along for a fun day out.
