The Turmeric and Health Newsletter for August 2026

Welcome to my August Newsletter.

AC Healthy Solutions Newsletter | AC Healthy Solutions

I hope that you are all having a good week. Mine has been a busy one, but at least it’s been   productive so that’s good. Though if any of you gardeners out there have a natural remedy for getting rid of caterpillars on your Brussel Sprouts, I would love to hear from you. I don’t want to use any nasty chemicals but taking them off by hand is long winded and a real pain. (Though it does take me back to my childhood and helping my mother in the garden, she used to hold contests between myself and my siblings as to who could find the most caterpillars, smart lady). 😃 I find it amazing that I can check on the plants in the morning and think that I’ve got rid of them all but if I check again in the afternoon, I can still find some and they are the bigger ones, so they were obviously there in the morning! Masters of disguise. 😃

But, enough of my gardening woes, as I do enjoy being out in the garden, especially this week as although it’s been cold; in the mornings it warms up nicely and has been lovely and sunny for the past week so so, which is also good for the markets. Which brings me neatly to my topic this month. At one of my recent markets, I was asked if turmeric was helpful with your thyroid and I honestly wasn’t sure of the answer, so I checked on PubMed and Google Scholar, to see what the answer might be and found several good scientific papers that came to the conclusion that yes, turmeric could help with the management of a thyroid condition. So, I hope you find the article of benefit.

And, whilst we are talking of gardens, now is the time for harvesting and planting many of your favourite root vegetables, so I thought that I would put up a recipe for one of my favourite ways to cook root veggies, which is to roast them. I love them as an accompaniment for lunch or dinner, but they also make a great base for a good veggie soup, especially with lentils or rice. Yum. Enjoy.

Hopefully I will see you round the markets, if not remember you can always give me a ring or jump online, go to my website and order your turmeric that way.

TURMERIC FOR THE THYROID AND THYROID FUNCTION

Turmeric, primarily through its active compound curcumin, can support thyroid health by reducing the inflammation and oxidative stress associated with autoimmune thyroid disorders, though it must be taken carefully to avoid interfering with thyroid medications.

While it offers several therapeutic advantages, it is a supportive supplement rather than a replacement for prescribed medical treatments.

Thyroid and Turmeric | AC Healthy Solutions

Key Benefits for Thyroid Health

  • Reduces Autoimmune Inflammation: Curcumin blocks NF-kB, a cellular master switch that activates inflammatory genes. This mechanism can lower the systemic inflammation and thyroid antibodies (like anti-TPO) found in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

  • Lowers Oxidative Stress: Chronic thyroid dysfunction creates a hyper-metabolic state that generates harmful free radicals. The powerful antioxidant properties of whole turmeric powder help neutralize this damage.

  • Heals the Gut-Thyroid Axis: Curcumin strengthens the intestinal lining. Repairing a "leaky gut" minimizes the foreign toxins that leak into the bloodstream and trigger autoimmune thyroid flare-ups.

  • Protects Against Goitres: Regular consumption of turmeric correlates with a reduced risk of developing goitres (enlarged thyroid glands), especially in populations prone to iodine deficiencies.

Critical Cautions and Interactions

  • Medication Malabsorption: Turmeric can interfere with how your body absorbs synthetic thyroid hormones like levothyroxine. You should take your thyroid medication on an empty stomach first thing in the morning and wait at least 4 hours before consuming a turmeric supplement.

  • Poor Bioavailability: Raw turmeric root contains only about 3% to 6% curcumin by weight. To achieve a therapeutic effect, doctors often suggest a concentrated curcumin supplement combined with black pepper (piperine), which significantly enhances absorption, which is what you find in our Health2all turmeric, along with coconut oil to aid transportation and digestive activators like cinnamon, ginger and green tea. These ensure about a 95% absorption.

  • Blood Thinning Effects: Turmeric exhibits mild anticoagulant properties. Consult your doctor before using it if you are taking prescription blood thinners like warfarin or if you have an upcoming surgical procedure.

As with all supplements, it is advisable to check with your doctor prior to taking Health2all Turmeric, especially if you are on other medications.
